Cuda Bowl begins tonight!

john-chinundunt-cudaThe 2016 Cuda Bowl will kick-off tonight at ‘My New Joint’ just upstairs from The Square Grouper Bar & Grill. We will have our captain’s meeting, read the rules, hand out the tournament goodie bags, rulers and score sheets. There will be some appetizers and a cash bar for all the participants. We thank Lynn Bell for hosting our event at her bar & restaurant this year.

Friday and Saturday are the fishing days. Anglers and guides are asked to come to Hurricane Hole after their fishing day is done for scoring and some after fishing party and food.

We will be selling raffle tickets for a 35 Quart Yeti Tundra cooler to benefit the Jose Wejebe Spanish Fly Foundation.  We will also have a variety of past tournament gear available at the event. We are asking for a donation for each piece you would like. The gear sales money will go to the Lower Keys Guides Association and to Jose Wejebe Spanish Fly Foundation equally.

We will be using an electronic scoring system this year from iAnglerTournament.com. The app for iAnglerTournament enables participants to upload a photo of their fish on the measuring device and note its length, what type of gear it was caught on, and the condition the fish was in when it was released. This data will be collected to help with the protection of barracuda as a gamefish.

Tournament News

The 2016 Cuda Bowl Registration is now closed. Due to the overwhelming response the tournament field is already full!

We have a wonderful array of sponsors this year for the event and we always thank them graciously for their support and donations. Their help is what has made this tournament such a big success!

Just a few reminders:

  • The Kick-Off will be at ‘My New Joint’ – located at Mile Marker 22.5 on Cudjoe Key above the world famous Square Grouper Bar and Grill. The meeting, distribution of tournament bags will begin at 6:30PM. We will go over the rules and distribute the Rapala official tournament rulers and score sheets. Entrants are invited to come join us for the meeting and enjoy some appetizers and a cash bar.
  • This is a flats fishing tournament and is catch and release only. Entrants into the Cuda Bowl need to be fishing from a flats skiff type boat with a poling platform. Bay boats may not be used in this years event.
  • We created this event to increase awareness of a wonderful flats gamefish – the barracuda. Since then the barracuda have been over-fished by commercial fishing and this past November 2015 were finally regulated to ensure there will be barracuda in our waters for the future.
  • It’s a fun event and the headquarters again will be at Hurricane Hole Bar & Grill on Stock Island.
  • There will be a raffle to benefit the Lower Keys Guides Association (LKGA.org).

Look forward to seeing you all February 4-6!

Cuda Bowl 2016

Cuda Bowl 2016 – February 4-6, 2016

Greetings Everyone! Good news for the Barracuda that starting November 1st the commercial bag limit on barracuda will be limited to 2 fish per person or 6 per boat per day. The FWC had previously approved at 20 fish commercial bag limit back in June but revisited it and came up with the more limited bag limit.

Although the Cuda Bowl is strictly a catch and release event, it has raised awareness about the barracuda and a species and as a game fish for flats anglers.

We are very happy to hear that there is so much concern over the protection of the barracuda and many thanks to the Lower Keys Guides Association. Our LKGA played an important part in initiating the subject of protecting this valuable species here in the Keys.

The Cuda Bowl tournament will be held in February in 2016. Captain’s Meeting will be Thursday, February 4th at 6PM with a location TBA. Fishing days will be February 5th and 6th and headquarters will be at Hurricane Hole Marina again.

Registration for the 2016 event will be available by September 7th. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis and the field will be limited to the first 25 boats. The entry fee is $250 (total price) for one angler, $300 for 2 anglers (total price). There can be two anglers maximum per boat.
